Starting in what many call the “Golden Age of Porcelain”, Royal Copenhagen was commissioned by the Danish King, Christian VII, to create a porcelain service worthy enough for Russian Empress Catherine II's porcelain collection. When the empress died before the work could be completed, the porcelain service remained in the possession of the Royal Danish Household. Today, that service currently belongs to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The collection, Flora Danica, or Danish Flora, was named after a great work of volumes featuring over 3000 copper prints that illustrated Danish flora to a very minute detail. Painstakingly transcribed by hand onto porcelain, the Flora Danica was, and continues to be, the Royal Copenhagen company’s greatest masterpiece. What makes Royal Copenhagen stand out from the rest is its authenticity and loyalty to the art of porcelain design. For instance, its ice-dome is diligently crafted using 16 separate processes that take a month to finish. While there may not be any use left in the world for ice domes, there is still a class of people who appreciate and admire porcelain for its own sake.
